“I’m convinced that we Black Women possess a special indestructible strength that allows us to not only get down, but to get up, to get through, and to get over.”

Hello sewing loves happy Thursday! Wow can you believe I’m actually here ready to share a blog post with all of you. It’s been a while since I’ve had a moment to just sit and commit to blogging and sharing. To be honest I still don’t have time considering I’m actually passing on lunch because I was committed to posting about this knit look today. Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of time so I can’t bring you all the way up to speed on what’s been happening in my life and why I’m so busy but I’m really going to try and not let so much time pass without checking in and sharing.
Many of you know that I have a monthly fabric box and to say it keeps me busy would be an understatement! The support we continually receive for the Nina Ramel Fabric Box has blown me AWAY! While I always thought this product had the potential to be something special, I never thought it would explode in the manner in which it has. Every month the sewing community shows up and shows out! I want you to know that I love you for it! As long as you want what the Nina Ramel Fabric Box has to offer in the way of fabric, I will keep bringing it to you! So let’s get into this look I’m serving today using knit from our September Fabric Box.
As soon as I saw this knit fabric I immediately knew I had to have it! Not only did I want it but I knew if given the opportunity my fabric box loves would want some too. This Poly/Cotton Chunky knit is the best thing since sliced bread and it’s perfect for walking into fall with the whole “IM HERE” vibe. If your looking for a truly versatile knit that has the potential to be almost anything this one right here is definitely it! As for me I wanted something comfortable, chic and totally badass! I mean it’s only 115 degrees out here in Cali so I thought if I’m going to really go through with a fall look right now, I’m going full on badass! Keep in mind I really don’t have time to commit to a lengthy sewing project so quick and easy was the only way to go. I knew I wanted a big comfy yet chic coat but wasn’t sure what pattern I was going to use (cause drafting is simply not an option these days).
Being the coat fanatic that I am I have a ton of coat/sweater patterns in my stash so it was simply a matter of finding one as close to what I wanted as possible. I settled on New Look 6585 and quickly went to work. For the pants I started out with a jogger pant pattern which turned out to be an absolute fail! So I switched things up and broke out my personal wide leg pant block and shortened it into a culotte pattern for the win! For the coat I pretty much stuck to the pattern outside of adding a large cuff and instead of having my pockets on the side seam I opted for placing them directly in the middle of the front pattern piece. If I had anything to add I would say be mindful of the bulk that could happen at the back neck area when joining the hood to the back pattern piece. If you have a serger great, then cut close to the edge with a fancy stitch and leave it alone. If you don’t have a serger then bias binding will be your friend when finishing this particular area. Unfortunately the pattern calls for using the same fabric to cleanly finish the back neck area but with this knit it was a no go for me. The bulk was horrible so I decided to go with the bias binding finish instead and I’m glad that I did (oh and yes I do have a serger).
Over all I love the look and to be honest I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m even considering making another using the green knit option from our September box. Well loves lunch is over and I’ve get to get back to the grind! Thanks so much for coming to hang out with me for a spell and I hope this look inspires you to create something fabulously comfortable and chic for fall!
