“Fabric is the medium of the garment designer. It is the two-dimensional, flexible surface that is transformed into a three dimensional form through the vision of the designer.”

Good Tuesday morning lovely sew family!!! I’m not sure if it’s just me or if anyone else feels like time is flying by this year. I guess when you’re busy doing things that you love and enjoying the process time does move rather quickly. I’m having so much fun gathering information and planning for the next stage of MD Threadz, that I can hardly contain myself. It is a wonderful feeling to have a vision and a plan but even more so to watch it all come together with the help of others who share your passion. In the midst of all my excitement regarding the blog and creating wonderful thing to share with all of you I still have my career which I also enjoy immensely.
As a result it is very important to maintain a sense of balance between my two loves. This past weekend was all about getting caught up at work, reviewing caseloads and getting my office organized. Unfortunately this left little to no time for sewing. No worries sewing family when it comes to fashion and all things sewing I am never short on topics or information to share with you on the blog. Recently I’ve been doing quite a bit of research on various textiles including the different textures, fabric content, colors and best practices for utilizing them. There is so much to absorb and take in with regard to fabric and making the right choices, that sometimes it can be a little overwhelming. The thing to remember is to stay focused, think outside the box and never be afraid to branch out and try new things. When you live in States with warmer climates it’s really easy to become attached to lighter, brighter fabrics out of necessity and for comfort. Living in California I completely understand this reasoning but also realize the importance of experimenting with textures and weights that aren’t always conducive to our particular climate.
During my last fabric shopping trip I found myself drawn to fabrics and colors that the average Californian would run from. Earth tones, deep blues, plums, winter whites and varying shades of greys drew me in and completely captivated my fabric palate. Despite the fact that it was 80 degrees that day I fell hard for these warm rich hues. The more I study this vast field of textiles the more open I become to exploring and experimenting with my fabric choices and designs. I encourage all of you to open your selves up to the freedom that comes with learning more about textiles, fabric content and color choices. After all choosing just the right fabric can be the difference between a good garment and a FABULOUS one!
Hugs
